Opening credits are the written information presented to the audience on who is starring in the films, and who has what roles. The opening credits are effective in thrillers when accompanied by sound to create tension and fear, and images that don't make complete sense, making the audience question what is going on.
Opening credits are used to introduce the film giving a taste of what it will be like. Also introducing the actors of the film, especially the main characters which set the film. In Opening credits we mostly expect to see the company which the film is produced from, what type of production it is, the director and creators of the film, the main characters, any one in particular starring in the film but may not be the main character(This is shown to the audience because eventhough the person may not be a main character, the audience will be familiar with them and seek their apperance in the film.) After viewing the opening credits, you want the audience to feel excited and to look forward into watching the rest of the film, to keep them engaged in the atmosphere and want them to enjoy it.
Se7en Analysis:

Lighting and colour:
Focusing on the lighting and colour, The director has chosen Low key Lighting, This is because low key lighting and dark gloomy colours are associated with thriller genre and very common in thriller films. Also this is the type of atmosphere I want to create for the audince when I start to make the thriller film. This effect is to make them feel confused and intriged to continue watching the thriller film. The flashing lights are very effective because it is all made to confuse the audience. For instance, flashing images of forensic science, investigations, newspaper articles etc.
Information Presented:
The information given in this opening is the Name of the production, Title,directors,Cast And co-casts. This is to intoduce the characters who will bw taking part in the film, especially if there is anyone making a special appearance in the film. This is also important because it helps the audience familiarise themselves with the actors who take part in different film genres.
Generic convensions:
The generic convensions in a thriller revolve around the idea of being mysterious, Twisted, a very dark and eary mood. Se7en has met all of these expectations because it's different from other film openings. For example, the use of mysterious images and dramatic music as part of the opening.

Order of apperance:
In the Se7en opening, there is no order of appearing. The order has been set to be muddled up in order to confuse the images by using extreme close ups and quick pace editing to increase the effect.

Typography:
Typography links to what type of font styles, colours and sizes the thriller be expected to use depending on the type of thriller and what time period the thriller is set in. For example, if it is set in the 1950's, the font would be in black and white, mostly bold and a standing out font type will be used. In This case we are looking at fonts that will relate to a thriller.

Looking at the typography of Se7en it is giving us the real idea of what this thriller film is about. Also using bold but faded letters in the background illustrating the mysteries of the film. This font also changes in colour and also fades out when it is introducing the roles of the different characters in the opening credits.

Having a look at these thriller font is giving me an idea of what colours and what type of font effects I would like to use in my thriller film for the opening credits. What I would really want to include in my thriller is the fading effect. I think it's really interesting because the fading effect could also blend in with the colouring we want to use. Also the Font size I was thinking of using was big fonts but thin. This is to create the mystery effect which describes the film and gives an idea of the mood of the film.

  1. A great start Jasmine. You've clearly defined the purpose of the opening credits and the relevance of typography in thriller movies. You provide a detailed discussion of the effectiveness of both.

    To improve;

    - Provide one more example of opening credits with analysis. How is the example used? What is the purpose? Ensure that you analyse in detail the typography too.

    -Your conclusion lacks discussion of ideas for your own opening credits that you would like to include.
